Learning outcomes and take away messages:

  1. There is a rising incidence of CRC in those younger than 50 years of age.
  2. Clinicians should continue to be vigilant in investigating any young person with gastrointestinal symptoms, especially in light of the rising incidence of CRC in this population 
    • Rectal bleeding
    • Change in bowel habits
    • Weight lost
    • IDA
  3. Barrett’s oesophagus is a premalignant condition. 
  4. Screening for Barrett’s oesophagus is indicated in high risk individuals. 
  5. Surveillance should be done after BE diagnosis. 
  6. PPI’s are recommended to avoid progression of Barrett’s. 
    • Possible benefit from high dose (BD). 
  7. Endoscopic resection is the preferred treatment for BE dysplasia and early adenocarcinoma.
